Life & Lyrics- “Sherry Darling”

Hey, hey, hey what you say Sherry darlin’

But I didn’t count on this package deal

And baby this car ain’t big enough for her and me

Sherry Darling

Bruce Springsteen

I love E Street Radio! How could I not? All Springsteen, all the time.  Fortunately, I had the privilege of being on-air for the station’s special series, Be the Boss, a few years ago.  That was a blast! I enjoyed my segment or should I say… five minutes of fame… immensely. It was quite a thrill to select 5 songs and share my personal “Bruce” stories.

Before I share my Sherry Darling story, a little backstory is necessary…

Although I listen to E Street Radio all the time, I’ve never been one to call into a live radio show… until two weeks ago that is. It all happened during yet another car ride down to Jersey.  It was Good Friday and we were all heading south to spend Easter with my family.  Of course, the background noise for all trips from the Ocean State to the Garden State is always E Street Radio.

Well, it was 6pm and E Street Radio’s show- The Wild and The Innocent with Host Jim Rotolo- kicked off.  The topic for that evening: Favorite Springsteen lyrics.  Once we heard the promo…favorite Springsteen lyrics…my son, Thomas exclaimed, “Mommy, you have to call! Tonight’s show is what your website’s all about.”  (Lee Lee’s Room combines my passion for writing with my passion for the music of Bruce Springsteen.  It’s a place to share stories about life… inspired by Bruce’s lyrics.)  Thomas was so right.  I had to call!!!

Suddenly, my heart started racing.  I was so nervous.  Despite the nerves, I began dialing the number on my cell phone.  To my surprise, it started ringing.  I was shocked.  I definitely expected a busy signal.  A moment later, the producer on the other end of the line is asking me what my favorite lyric is…

Talk about a dream, try to make it real.

(Please read my blog titled Badlands for that story.)

Now back to the show…on the air…LIVE from E Street Nation…OMG! I tell everyone in the car to shut up….then I hear Jim say…

“Let’s go to Lisa from New Jersey”… (I may live in Rhode Island but I will ALWAYS be Lisa from New Jersey)…

Jim asks what my favorite lyric is…  I tell him my Badlands story and feel fabulous.

Well, I had such an amazing time that I tuned in the following week for another edition of The Wild and The Innocent. This time, Jim’s topic was…a favorite character in a Bruce song.  And this time, I had to press redial 70 times to get through.  I guess I had beginner’s luck the previous week.

Hmmmm…favorite character??? I suppose I could’ve picked Rosie, Candy, Wendy, or Mary (Bruce sure does use Mary a lot…Mary’s Place, The Rising, Thunder Road to name a few)…however I chose Sherry Darling.

And baby this car ain’t big enough for her and me

I’ve always loved the song Sherry Darling.  It feels like a summertime party song to me.  Plus, I would be mistaken if I didn’t mention the fact that there’s a lot of the Big Man’s saxophone in Sherry Darling.  And well, that’s all the more reason to love the song! Now as for Sherry the character…

But I didn’t count on this package deal

And baby this car ain’t big enough for her and me

I can relate to Sherry especially since I grew up in an old- school, Italian household.  I didn’t move out until I got married. Doing otherwise was not only out of the question, but disrespectful and against my family’s code of ethics and protocol.

Although I’ve been married for the past 13 years and although I have children of my own now, I truly believe that I didn’t grow up until this past year.  I turned 40 and finally felt mature enough to do anything and say anything….finally felt a sense of self…finally started to grasp who I really am … finally connected to the inner Lee Lee … finally felt comfortable with Lee Lee…you get the point!

In my opinion, in the song Sherry Darling, Bruce is asking Sherry to become her own person.  That’s exactly why I love the character.  There’s no doubt, I need my family…my husband, children, parents…and I always will… my car will ALWAYS be big enough for them…HOWEVER, to evolve and truly know yourself… is not a package deal.  It’s a journey that you have to embrace and embark on as an individual. And when you find your true self…that’s a gift!

Hey, hey, hey what you say Lee Lee darlin’

Well thankfully I’ve started the journey…stay tuned…

Speaking of tuning in…back to my story…Live on E Street Radio…

Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed talking Springsteen with E Street Radio Host, Jim Rotolo.  Calling into his show just might become one of my new Friday night rituals.

Hey, hey, hey what you say Lee Lee darlin’

Lee Lee has a lot to say…let’s hope Jim doesn’t get sick of taking my calls. LOL

Xo,
