Out in the Street

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band

One of the happiest moments in my life took place in August of 2009. That’s when my husband and I took our three sons to their first Springsteen concert.  What an amazing feeling to witness my 8, 7, and 4-year-old singing along to classic Bruce.  I was incredibly proud.  I did my job in the music department of raising children.  I led by example and they certainly followed my lead.   Forget about Kids Bop or Radio Disney!  Are you kidding me?  It’s Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band and don’t ask me why? The answer is…because I said so!

The boys especially love singing, “Out in the Street.”  Hmmm…maybe playing it over and over in my car might have something to do it? I’m not a manipulative mother at all.  Honest…NOT!

“Out in the Street” is the one song that always reminds me of my first Bruce concert…August of 1985…at Giants Stadium.

“Cause there’s a party honey”

“Now tonight, you’re gonna have a good time.”

There was an enormous party and I had a fantastic time! Listening to “Out in the Street” brings me to such a happy place. It’s a cherished memory and definitely one of the highlights of my childhood.  Of course, the setting for my first Bruce concert was perfect…in my home state, in the swamps of Jersey, on a summer night, and during the height of the “Born in the USA” tour.

Tickets for the event of the year weren’t exactly easy to get.  Shows sold out in record timing. I begged my Mom and Dad to pay a fortune for tickets.   They thought I was out of my mind. The answer was NO.  But thankfully, one of my Dad’s business partners came through for me.  He knew someone who knew someone…you know how that goes.

I found out my Dad was able to score two tickets just hours before the concert.  I got ready in a flash…threw on what I consider a mid 80s- Springsteen fashion statement…blue jeans and a t- shirt and it was off we go!  I was ridiculously excited during the ride down the New Jersey Turnpike to the Meadowlands.  Yes, I’m going to see the Boss!  What a dream come true.  My Mom was my chaperone.  Don’t laugh or tease…I was only 13 after all.

I can still hear the roar of the crowd when the band broke into “Out in the Street.”  What a scene to watch as a teenager. It was so fascinating to see thousands and thousands of screaming fans…jumping up and down and going completely nuts!  The energy level was over the top.

There’s no doubt “Out in the Street” kicks ass!  The song is powerful, energetic, and fun.  Every single time I listen to it, I think back to that incredible concert.  It’s a childhood memory that I will treasure forever!  I can only hope that someday my three boys will cherish the memory of their first Springsteen concert.  I have no doubt they’ll always remember driving around town in Mom’s taxi service with BRUUUUUUUUCE blasting.

Great story Lisa! How great is it that you were able to pass down and share your love of music with your boys?! They will undoubtedly always have fond memories of this special bond every time they listen to Bruce. Your passion for Bruce’s music as well as your writing are infectious! Already looking forward to the next post :)

Another great “blog”! Enjoying each week, even though I’m not really into Springsteen. However, I believe I will become a fan sooner than later with reading your “inspirational” words!
