When they said, “sit down”
I stood up
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
I recently celebrated my 40th birthday. I couldn’t wait to turn 40. I embraced the big 4-0 with so much hope and happiness.
At 40, I’ve officially grown up. I’m expressing myself, doing what I want, and I’m comfortable in my own skin. Turning 40 feels liberating. It’s a coming of age. It’s Independence Day. I’ve finally evolved. Gone are the days of making excuses or giving apologies for my actions and decisions. Now I literally believe in the phrases, “I am what I am” and “It is what it is.” I feel confident and ready to tackle whatever gets thrown my way.
Springsteen’s Growin Up brings a smile to my face and gives me a boost of energy. It’s a pep rally song. It’s motivating. When I sing along to it, I want to shout out to everyone, “Here I am world. I’ve arrived. I’m confident, comfortable, and secure.”
My close friend Dana recently shared her thoughts about growing up with me. It’s spot on and makes absolutely perfect sense. “ You choose your future, not your past.” Her thoughts are brilliant. At 40, I’ve lived long enough to learn from my past. Now I have the knowledge, the experience, and the power to shape my future. I can set realistic goals, work hard to achieve them, and anxiously anticipate what’s yet to come.
Another close friend Betty-Jo helped me realize that the answers in life are all up to me. Betty-Jo is someone I try to emulate and she’s a fantastic mentor. Her words of wisdom are quite genius… “ At 40, the world is yours. Enjoy it and enjoy how much easier the word NO just seems to come out.” She’s so right. I’m finally at the point in my life where I know where I’ve been, I can speak my mind, and I don’t have to feel pressured into doing anything. At 40 I know what I want and I can make it happen. I’m moving forward with strength and confidence.
Turning 40 is fun, fantastic and fabulous!
